Why Fair Trade?

By choosing to support Fair Trade, GloryBee is showing a commitment to do better for the world, protect the environment, and support small holder farmers in producer communities. A Fair Trade label is a way to ensure food is produced in a community that is paid fairly for their commodity, and has access to basic health care, education, healthy food and clean water. Fair Trade certifiers pay a premium to the small holder farmers, and facilitate an annual social project in the small holder farming community. The cost of this premium is passed on to the distributor and the consumer. While the premium often makes a Fair Trade certified good more expensive that its counterpart, it is a way for consumers to translate their values up the supply chain.

Some of our products come from around the world, and we take great care to source these products responsibly. Fair Trade certification is one way GloryBee ensures producer communities receive a fair wage and are employed under fair labor practices. Fair Trade certification has increased by 73% since 2010, and continues to grow. Certified products include raw honey, honey bears, spices and coconut oil.

Aunt Patty’s Favorite Cooking Oils

There are many choices of healthy cooking oils on the market today and home chefs, like myself, and want to know why they should use certain oils in their kitchen. The three oils that are my own personal favorites from my line are Aunt Patty’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Organic Red Palm Oil.

The benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil are the ease of working with it when cooking, and it can be used as a substitution oil in many recipes. It has the wonderful smell of coconuts, and contains fats that are good for your body and skin! Use it when sautéing as it has a higher heat point than many other oils. Add a spoonful to your morning smoothie recipe, you’ll love it! This oil remains semi-solid at room temperature which means it can last much longer than your average oil.

My Aunt Patty’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil is another kitchen staple for me. This oil is high quality and has a hint of green, mild olive flavor without being overpowering. I like to use it when I whip up homemade salad dressings, marinades and pestos. If you are like me, you want skin and body care products that are organic and natural. Try using my olive oil to make homemade body care products like soaps and scrubs that you can feel good about putting on your skin.

The newest oil we have added to my line is Organic Red Palm Oil. I have spent lots of time experimenting and learning in my kitchen about the different uses for this unique oil. I have a quick hint for you; just use small amount in your recipes as this oil has an earthy quality to it, so keep the flavor subtle. I like to sauté vegetables and meats with Organic Red Palm Oil, but again, small amounts as you don’t want to mask the flavors of the other ingredients you’re cooking with. This oil also contains the highest amount of vitamins A and E of any of the plant-based oils, so it is a nutritious addition to your meals.

An Early Journey with Refined Sugars

Starting my own family was a great motivator to seek out healthier ingredients to add to some of our favorite dishes. My first target was refined sugars. My husband was a beekeeper and beekeeping supply dealer which meant we had access to lots and lots of honey. I am a huge fan of working with what you have, so I decided to switch out traditional sugar for honey. I will admit those first recipes weren’t always successful but I kept working with honey in my cooking and baking until I got it just right.

Here are my recommendations for substituting sugar with honey:

For 1 cup of sugar, use 2/3 to ¾ cup of honey
Reduce oven temperature by 25?degrees
Reduce liquid ¼ Cup per Cup of honey
Add ½ tsp baking soda per Cup of honey

Oregon State’s Bee Research Gets Sweet Boost From Local Company

Eugene, Ore. – On April 10, at GloryBee’s Annual Bee Weekend, Alan Turanski, GloryBee President, and RaeJean Wilson, Senior Executive Vice President, presented a $44,538 check to the Oregon State University Honey Bee Lab. The funds will be used towards its research on bee health, nutrition, and pollination from 2014 funds raised as part of GloryBee’s Save the Bee Program.

Save the Bee retail and bulk revenue of GloryBee® Honey, retail beekeeping supplies, customer donations, and community fundraisers benefit OSU research and the Oregon State Beekeeping Association’s Master Beekeeping Program. “Saving honey bees and impacting the pollination of our food supply is not something we can do ourselves. In order to gain a stronger foothold, the OSU Honey Bee lab needs more financial support. Their research connects farmers, beekeepers and the community to be more successful,” states RaeJean Wilson, GloryBee Senior Executive Vice President.

For honey bee labs like Oregon State’s, funding is invaluable to continue to expand its work on bee nutrition, health and pollination. According to Dr. Sagili, funds need to reach $300,000 annually in order for his team to be successful each year, working with commercial and backyard beekeepers, producers, farmers and local communities. GloryBee is dedicated to increasing its contributions each year with continued Pacific Northwest partnerships.

Bee presentationBEEKEEPING PREPARATION
Beekeepers prepare for the beekeeping year early by preordering packaged bees. Due to the increasing popularity of beekeeping as a hobby, it is recommended to order bees early in case of shortages. Beginners can prepare by purchasing how-to books and attending workshops like those offered through local beekeeping associations. Supplies like boxes, frames, foundation and other equipment should be purchased well in advance to allow plenty of time to paint the hives and prepare the frames and foundation. For an easy way to get started, GloryBee offers a beginning beekeeping kit that will get novices off on the right foot.

MEET THE 2015 AMERICAN HONEY QUEEN
As the 2015 American Honey Queen, this representative serves as a national spokesperson on behalf of the American Beekeeping Federation, a trade organization representing beekeepers and honey producers throughout the United States. The Honey Queen and Princess speak and promote in venues nationwide, and, as such the Queen will travel throughout the United States during her year-long reign.

The beekeeping industry touches the lives of every individual in our country. In fact, honeybees are responsible for nearly one-third of our entire diet, in regards to the pollination services that they provide for a large majority of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. This amounts to nearly $19 billion per year of direct value from honeybee pollination to United States agriculture.

LEARN WITH BEE GIRL
Bee GirlSarah Red-Laird is the founder and Executive Director of Bee Girl. Her love of bees and their honey began in Southern Oregon, on the deck of her aunt's cabin, at the end of a country road. Sarah carried her affinity for honey bees with her through to Montana where she chose honey bees and Colony Collapse Disorder as her research project for the Davidson Honors College at the University of Montana. She graduated with honors, and as a University Scholar from UM's College of Forestry and Conservation.

She is excited to "bee" in Southern Oregon to combine her love of bees with her education, outreach, and non-profit experience to encourage and support the newest generation of bee lovers. No matter what she gets her honey stickied hands into, at the core of the Bee Girl organization is our mission of preserving honeybees, beekeepers, and food resources by providing outreach, education, support, and mentorship for beekeepers and communities.

Bee Girl teaches classes for beginning beekeepers and works one-on-one with beekeepers and their honey bees. She works to educate the next generation of honey beekeepers and advocates through her Kids and Bees program and the Southern Oregon University Beekeeping Club. She is also working on an initiative to help farmers and other land managers help our bees though conserving bee habitat and planting bee forage.

40 Years in Business Leads to Milestone Transition

Amidst double-digit growth, GloryBee, Inc. reaches its 40th year in business and passes the baton from founders to their second generation. In a time when many other family-owned companies are choosing to merge with industry giants, GloryBee remains steadfast to their core values and promotes Vice President Alan Turanski, son of founders Dick and Pat Turanski to President of the widely-regarded ingredient company. RaeJean Wilson daughter of the founders, is elevated to Senior Executive Vice President formerly VP of Brand and Stewardship. Mr. Dick Turanski assumes the position of Chief Procurement Officer and Mrs. Pat Turanski is now Chief Stewardship Officer.

“We hold our children in high esteem,” states Dick and Pat Turanski, “and we have the utmost faith in their ability to lead this company through the next forty years. “Additionally,” Pat Turanski states, “in our new roles, Dick and I will continue to support the executive team and focus our strengths where we can be most effective.”

The transition begins February 2 with refinements established for the new roles and how they will influence the company’s future. GloryBee plans to continue setting trends within the natural foods industry, leading local and national sustainability efforts, increasing production capacity, and raising more funds for their social initiatives.

“GloryBee is in good shape to make this change.” states Alan Turanski. “We’ve been running the company with our capable staff with oversight from our founder, Dick Turanski. He will continue to oversee the millions of pounds of the highest quality natural and organic ingredients we contract for domestically and from all over the world, while Pat will continue our stewardship efforts.”

RaeJean states, “I’m really looking forward to building upon what my parents started in 1975 in partnership with our new president, my brother Alan Turanski. I will continue to work closely with my mom as we continue to partner with organizations to improve honey bee health and provide nourishing foods to regional schools.”

A formal event was recently held with all the employees as witnesses to the historic occasion of the leadership change.
