GloryBee Women Stand Strong

Today is International Women’s Day, and we are proud to spotlight the incredible women who make GloryBee’s mission to be protect the bees and offer 100% pure honey possible. From warehouse specialists and quality assurance technicians to project managers and sales executives, these women are inspiring GloryBee to use business as a force for good. Let’s give them the recognition they deserve and drive awareness about the power and creativity women bring to the world.

Three ways you can celebrate International Women’s Day

  1. Educate yourself: Research the struggles women have endured on their journey for equality. Although progress has been made to empower women, they still make up the majority of our world’s poorest populations. In addition 1/3 of all women are victims of physical or sexual assaults. Acknowledging these harsh facts arms you with knowledge to improve the lives of women.
  2. Volunteer or donate at a local women’s shelter- It doesn’t have to be anything big, maybe just some clothes, food or your time and a smile. Helping a local women’s shelter brings compassionate relief to women in need and helps connect you with the challenges and difficulties women still continue to face today. Be the hands of goodness.
  3. Tell a woman why she is special: We all have some incredible women in our lives. How often do we tell them what they mean us? Try telling a female family member, friend, co-worker or boss why they’re important to you. Lift up the women in your life with positive words.

Plant these to SAVE the BEES

Why do we need to save the bees?

In the 1980’s honey bees began to die off at alarming rates. Scientists diagnosed this tragic phenomenon as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). No single reason has been found to be responsible for the large losses of honey bees and more research is needed to find a cure and help save the bee.

How YOU can help SAVE the BEE

  1. Purchase organic products pollinated by bees- as consumers of food products, we have strong purchasing power. Every time you buy organic, you impact those sales—forcing grocery stores to supply more organic foods. This helps bees, organic farmers and our overall wellness.
  2. Eliminate pesticide use- never use harmful pesticides, particularly brands containing neonicotinoid ingredients.
  3. Become an urban beekeeper-keeping your own bee hives will help boost and strengthen bee populations, pollinate your garden and preserve the knowledge and ancient art of beekeeping.
  4. Plant Bee-Friendly plants- Nourish and attract honey bees with nectar producing plants.

GloryBee and Honey Bees

In 1975 GloryBee began as “Dick’s Bee Supplies”. We sold beekeeping gear to local beekeepers and soon that same year we started to sell honey. A lot has changed in the past 42 years, but one thing that has remained constant is our love for honey bees. To find out more about how you can SAVE the BEE click here.

GloryBee Helps Skinner City Farm

GloryBee is always looking for an opportunity to get involved in our local community and help save the bees. When one of our partners, Pedaler's Express, told us about Skinner City Farm Community Garden being in need of cardboard to use to cover their soil, we were more than happy to lend a helping hand.

GloryBee was able to set aside a mountain of cardboard and on February 21st Pedaler's Express picked it up and delivered it to Skinner City Farm using their special delivery bicycle.

This city garden is more than a community partnership--in the spring, when the garden begins to grow, it provides a safe haven for the bees to flourish and pollinate the blossoms. GloryBee started out in 1975 as a supplier of beekeeping equipment, and honey is at the core of our company, so anything we can do to help these pollinators thrive makes our hearts happy. The honey bee population is declining and GloryBee's SAVE the BEE initiative encourages everyone to get involved and help save the honey bee.

Strawberry Honey Jam

We’re lucky in the Willamette Valley to grow so many types of berries. We still have many leftover in our freezer from the summer. Rainy day weekends are a perfect time to make some jam. Instead of using standard cane sugar, branch out and try using honey, coconut sugar or maple sugar. The result will be beautiful jars full to the brim of tasty homemade goodness.

Ingredients (yields 5 cups of jam):

4 cups of chopped and mashed organic strawberries
1 cup of Organic Clover Honey
2 tsp pectin (Pomona’s Pectin)
2 tsp calcium water (Pomona’s Pectin)

Directions

    1. Wash and rinse all jars, screw bands. You can use recycled GloryBee honey jars if you like. Keep jars in a clean sink, covered with hot water. Add lids to a saucepan of hot water, keeping warm while making the jam.

    1. Prepare the strawberries. Wash and clean all fruit, removing hulls and stems. You can use frozen berries too, just make sure to let the berries thaw all the way. Chop and mash strawberries, putting in stock pot when done.

    1. Add calcium water to strawberries, stir well.

    1. Measure honey into a separate bowl. Mix pectin thoroughly into honey and set aside.

    1. On the stove on high heat, bring strawberries to a rolling boil stirring constantly. Add honey and pectin, return mixture to a full rolling boil, stirring constantly (about 3-5 min cooking time). Remove strawberries from heat.

  1. Fill jars to ¼ of top. Wipe jar rims clean, screw on 2-piece lids. Process jars in a water bath canner with boiling water for 10 minutes. Remove jars from canner and allow to cool at room temperature. Check lids to ensure seal has taken.

Vanilla-Orange Honey Body Polish

Sugar scrubs are a wonderful way to pamper your skin. The nice thing about making your own is that you can control what ingredients you use. It’s easy to make your own in less than 10 minutes with a few simple natural ingredients you might already have in your pantry. You can also make the recipe in bulk and give out as gifts to friends.

Ingredients:

1 cup Coconut Sugar
¼ cup Wildflower Blossom honey
2 tsp Jojoba Oil
1 tsp Vanilla Fragrance Oil
5-10 drops of Organic Orange Essential Oil
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Store mix in a jar or airtight container. Apply all over wet or dry skin (not on face). Gently rub in a circular motion. Let sit on skin for a few minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

Cherry Cheesecake

In celebration of President's Day, we wanted to pass along a new spin on an old recipe. How about cheery cheesecake instead of cherry pie? We also love partnering with our neighbor, Nancy's Yogurt. Nancy's cream cheese and sour cream are exceptional quality and they taste great along with GloryBee and Aunt Patty's products. Give our recipe a try and let us know what you think!

Ingredients

Crust ingredients:

1-1/4 cup crushed graham crackers
1/3 cup Aunt Patty’s Fair Trade Coconut Oil
½ cup Aunt Patty’s Coconut Sugar
1 Tsp cinnamon
Pinch of fine sea salt

Filling ingredients:

16 ounces cream cheese, softened (We like Nancy’s).
1 cup Aunt Patty’s Coconut Sugar
3 Tbls organic sour cream (Again, it's hard to beat Nancy's)
½ Tbls vanilla
2 organic eggs

Cherry Topping ingredients:
5 cups organic frozen pitted cherries
½ cup coconut sugar
¼ cup water
1 tbls corn starch
1 tsp almond extract (optional)

Directions

  1. Crush graham crackers in food processor or by using a plastic bag and using a rolling pin.
  2. Place crushed graham crackers, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and fine sea salt into mixing bowl and mix together with a fork or spoon.
  3. Gently warm coconut oil to a liquid state.
  4. Slowly pour coconut oil into dry ingredients while mixing to ensure good coverage.
  5. Pour mixture into 9 inch pie pan and use bottom of drinking glass to compact mixture. Use the back of a spoon or your fingers to compact the sides.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Allow to cool.
  7. While baking crust, mix ingredients for filling. Combine softened cream cheese, coconut sugar, sour cream, vanilla and eggs in a large bowl with an electric mixer.
  8. When crust has cooled slightly, pour filling into pie pan. Bake in preheated oven at 300 degrees for 65-70 minutes until set.
  9. Cool completely, storing in refrigerator until ready to serve.
  10. For topping, combine cherries, coconut sugar and half of water in a medium saucepan until heated thoroughly. Take cornstarch and remainder of water, make into a simple slurry. Add to cherries and mix until thickened. Top each slice of cheesecake with cherries right before serving. Enjoy!

Saint Valentine- Patron Saint of Beekeepers and Lovers

Thy love is sweeter than honey
Throughout history, honey bees have been associated with love. Myths from ancient Egypt and Greece highlight the powerful romantic effect bees have on humans—from cupid dipping his arrows in honey, to Ra, the sun god’s tears becoming bees and helping him woo back his lost love.

In some cultures, before a wedding, the bride and groom to-be walk through a swarm of bees—if neither of them are stung, then their love is meant to be. And honey is thought by many to be a powerful “love potion”, encouraging feelings of attraction and romance.

Protector of Beekeepers
Bees symbolize love and beekeepers symbolize the protection of marriage and family. By managing their hives and caring for their bees, beekeepers ensure that their bee colonies flourish and the honey continues its sweet flow. Keeping bees is a special calling- it requires scientific know-how, but also requires a kind and gentle heart. To protect these protectors of bees, St. Valentine was made the patron saint of Beekeepers in 496A.D.

St. Valentine lived in the third century, when the Roman Empire was still flourishing. Legends say the Roman Emperor banned marriages because he thought single men made better soldiers. Valentine was found guilty of secretly marrying couples. While in jail, awaiting his execution, he began to convert his jailers to Christianity. To prove his faith, the head-jailer asked Valentine to heal his blind daughter, which Valentine did by praying with his hands over her eyes. After his execution, a letter was found in his cell, addressed to the jailers daughter—it was signed “your Valentine”.

St. Valentine is believed by many to aid those who call on his intercession to help ensure the sweetness of the season’s honey and provide special protection to those who keep bees. His feast day is February 14, which is the day he was executed.
